Enabling Experimental OpenGL Driver on MATE 16.04

Are there any instructions on how to enable the experimental GL driver in 16.04? I followed the tutorial for MATE 15.10, and it won’t boot when I have dtoverlay=vc4-kms-c3d enabled in config.txt. The release notes indicate that it is possible to enable the GL driver, but I haven’t found a way.

Particularly, I would like GL acceleration so that KiCad 4.0.3’s GL viewport in pcbnew is accelerated. It would also be fun to play around with desktops like Cinnamon, but I know that may be too much for the experimental driver.
