Hi, @dsl and welcome to the Ubuntu MATE Community!

maybe you can explain your setup ... is it a laptop or desktop, does it have an OS already? usually, when you connect an external ssd, it becomes /dev/sdc assuming sda is the existing ssd and sdb is the usb stick to install um.

During install you tell it to install everything on /dev/sdc There will be an issue later when you boot since it may boot from sda and not sdc. F12 on laptops let you select the boot order. Without details, it is hard to help.

In addition to @pavlos_kairis suggestions, if that "Show Log" button works, could you please capture its output and post it in your reply?

Well here are step-by-step guides on how to install ubuntu on external ssd - it's not the newest article but I don't think much has changed

Be sure to check if you've missed some along the way and redo the process and do keep us updated!

Hmm can you specify the manufacturer of the said SSD you are using? And specifications, like what is the write speed? I know I had some issues with transferring ISO files on Verbatim SSD but on Samsung SSD they just go no errors at all even though both are USB 3.0 and Verbatim is bought this year so is a lot newer but was a lot cheaper option as well

On a smaller 32GB USB Verbatim I have I couldn't even install current Ubuntu 24.04 that I'm running without errors so I had to use Phillips one instead - idk why but some external drives act funny depending on the size and manufacturer

What I found about Kingston SSD and Ubuntu:

https://www.linux.org/threads/error-installing-ubuntu-on-my-external-ssd-fixed.50183/

On the second link do try and see if you've checked out all of the possible issues

That's a SATA drive. I've had problems installing U-MATE 24.04 on a SATA M.2 drive with the exact same error message. I ended up installing 22.04 and then upgrading from there.

I would remove the internal drive before installing to the external drive to avoid looking at a blinking cursor and grub rescue.

Thank you i will try

i tried to install ubuntu22.04 but i got this errors

this is the error

Ohh I had the exact same issue and it turned out that USB was the problem - maybe try with another USB if you've got one by any chance and do use one that has a good writting/reading speed

Hope everything works better than it did! 24.04. version is pretty polished in my honest opinion

The first issue was not solved, but the second issue occurs only when using a version of 22.10 and version 23.10. As for the first problem, it only in a version of 24.04

What was the first, unsolved issue, again? Could you be more specific please?
