Missing Topmost Mate Taskbar/Panel

Hi there, just installed standard Ubuntu 20.04 LTS but thought I'd try Mate by installing via "apt-get install ubuntu-mate-desktop" rather than a clean install from an ISO.

However, the top taskbar/panel/dock is missing so I can't logout without using terminal or easily access its features including all the installed apps.

On logging into the Mate environment I did come across the error, "could not apply the stored configuration for monitors". So after doing some research, I did come across people suggesting I should delete ...monitors.xml, but after a search (including hidden files) I don't have such a file.

Also tried "mate-panel --replace", but all that did was reboot bottom panel. The top panel was still missing.

Any ideas please?

Hello @linuxian, you got the MATE desktop on Ubuntu by installing cinnamon-desktop-environment?

Haha. Yes, rather rushed through my terminal and copied the wrong line. You probably guessed I installed Cinnamon alongside Ubuntu's standard Gnome as well as Mate.

Anyway OP edited. Cheers :beers: :beers:

3 DE's on the install. Interesting.

First off try running: mate-panel --reset
That should reset the panel and hopefully resolve the issue.

If that doesn't work you can change panel layout in either Welcome or mate-tweak to something like Redmond while troubleshooting the issue to give you full access to all the features.

Yes I did that. Should've mentioned in the OP. Basically, mate-panel --reset will refresh the bottom but nothing happens to installing the missing top.

Yes I have no problem running six DEs through Debian 10. I really liked Linux Mint Cinnamon but since moving up through the kernels to 5.3 it became unstable on my system. Went back to 4.19 but still had some problems, so decided to try and test Ubuntu through a few DEs to see how I got on.

If you haven't fixed your issue yet, maybe this Panel related thing I figured out last night might be helpful:

A possible workaround:

If there is at least one panel, you can right click on it and choose New Panel. On the new panel, you can right click and choose Properties, and then set it where you want, including the top.

After putting the new panel on the top (if it hasn't already been created at the top), you can add the Indicator Applet Complete to the right (using right click -> Add to Panel) and your preferred menu on the left with the same approach.

And voilà, there is the top bar

Sorry if you already tried this, or if this is not what you are looking for.

Another possible workaround: (maybe better than the one I posted above)

Press Alt+F2 and run mate-tweak.

On it, go to Panel and choose/change your layout. You may receive your top panel back.

I tired both and both worked :-). Thanks man, I can now play away for a bit. Apart from the top panel this has been really robust so far compared to Cinnamon. Even Debian Stable 10 running Cinnamon went AWOL on me within ten minutes of using it.

Will see how it goes.

Thanks everyone and thanks again Paulo
