Continuing the discussion from LTSP edition request:
As far as I know Edubuntu is the only official Ubuntu flavour that was not released as part of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. The Edubuntu project leaders Jonathan Carter and Stéphane Graber have recently announced their intentions of stepping down.
Of all Ubuntu flavours, Edubuntu is currently receiving the least support while Ubuntu MATE certainly receives the most. I would be delighted if Ubuntu MATE further extends its appeal beyond its desktop environment and make it a first choice platform for users in academia.
Edubuntu is geared more towards children and teachers and certainly has an appeal in its own right. But I feel that less is more and many smaller distributions such as Edubuntu would be better off by pooling their resources or merging with other distros. Now that a change in the Ubuntu flavours landscape is becoming apparent if not inevitable, I think this is a unique chance to adopt what Edubuntu was doing well (I think its focus on promoting digital literacy and the use of free software in educational environments) and to discard what it did not so well (lack of customizability, desktop environment, not easy enough to use). This in turn would strengthen the Ubuntu MATE profile and enhance its marketability.
What other distribution if not Ubuntu MATE is best equipped to promote digital literacy and to fill this new gap if Edubuntu ceases to exist?

Maro, I completely agree with this. A merger of Edubuntu and UM (or a second Edubuntu version of UM) would be absolutely awesome. I suppose we would have to call it Edubuntumate.
As it happens, up until UM 16.04, my particular combo was Edubuntu 14.04 with UM desktop installed over the top with a final icing of Ubuntu Studio meta- package for good measure…
The only reason I do not have that set-up now is due to a lack of Edubuntu 16.04 LTS. My reason for doing all of the above was the pre-built LTSP server in Edubuntu since installing LTSP after the fact is, and always has been, an absolute pain. Indeed, I have been spending the last several weeks, to no avail whatsoever, trying to install LTSP in UM 16.04.
So, as you can see, although in truth my primary reason for liking Edubuntu is merely the LTSP aspect, I have a very strong vested interest in seeing your suggestion come to fruition!
That looks really promising Wolfman. Sadly for me, however, it does not include LTSP.
Hi Steve,
I have no idea myself but stacks of info here about LTSP, maybe there is something you can use?:

Thanks for the link Wolfman. Been there ton of times. Unfortunately, I have found the stuff on there is out of date and/or just does not work as described. Or, at least when I have tried to follow the instructions. And I am reasonably good at following instructions.

I think that "School-MATE" would be a better name for it myself.
