Rendering in the console

I have figured out, that my Ubuntu Jellyfish renders the content of the console the other way than Bash manuals would expect. If I type in man man, I can read "Rendering in the console."..."For instance, man will usually not be able to render italics when running in a terminal, and will typically use underlined". And yet, this is what is happening. Is there a way how to customize this? E.g. I would also change text rendered to bold to text highlighted by color, because bold is something, which looks like it won't work either.

change terminal preferences.

Well, I could enable bold text, but how do I enable italics?
