Trimming down my Ubuntu Mate System

Can I do the same for Ubuntu 16.04 hide these files so I don’t have to see them

Do you mean straight Ubuntu with no MATE? … I didn’t see multiple linux installs on your gparted screen.

No I have another system also a dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 also

give me a minute I’ll load Ubuntu

Thanks man really appreciated it

Rob,
Run this “sudo du -Sh / | sort -rh | head -n 15” inside your booted UM, to see what space the top ten directories are using.

Sorry but this command does not work of me

So I assume that you have a "dock" on the left side of the screen and close to the bottom there are mounted drives.
If that's similar to your desktop you should be able to "right click" on any icon an choose undock.
The opposite is also true ... ie if you launch Thunderbird and want it to always be docked simply right click the icon and choose "Lock to Launcher"

here's my upper left screen to compare

Ok question? I don’t want to go off topic which I already believe I did and for that I’m very sorry I don’t want to make thing more confusing, but if I can see this Windows files on my Ubuntu desktop can these Windows files be the cause of all the disk space being used on my Linux system

That's not really off topic at all. Again to satisfy yourself refer to the gparted screen shot and notice the different identifiers. Also try that command df -h - it'll display all the places on your drive consuming space.

BTW - thanks for pointing out Disk Usage Analyzer. It also displays where the space users are. hover over a space with you mouse and you should see the area with the most space

Sounds good I’ll look at it more tomorrow because I really want to find out why so much space is being used, I don’t use a lot of apps or even install unwanted programs only the ones that are needed

I’m more of a fast running Ubuntu them having things cluddered up, I will share my results with you tomorrow I’m about to do some tweaking have a great night my friend and thanks a bunch

First I would like to say thanks to everyone that took the time to lend a helping hand

After doing some searching on my machine I was able to locate the resource HOG I believe it was a Windows backup folders that was sitting in one of my desktop folders, anyways

I Used BleachBit as recommended by Pfeiffep and set most if not all the settings as suggested, The only one I did not see was the browser setting for Chrome to keep things clean.

I used BleachBit ran it and it seemed to clean a lot of unwanted files which is good in my first screen shot you can see my disk space was 147.14 GB and was using 47.95.GB, After everything here's the out come

Oh and I'm very happy with the results Thank you everyone for helping me tracking the problem down....

WOW Rob that's a HUGE difference!

I searched for confirmation of this, but found none, however on my BleachBit install

BleachBit DOES NOT use the same settings for Chrome & Chromium

Have you decided on Ubuntu vs Ubuntu MATE?

Hey Pete yea it is man I could not sleep knowing something was using my disk space. LOL

Yea I use Ubuntu Mate, and Ubuntu 16.04 and Linux mint along with Lubuntu as well

Oh ya and only one Windows Os …

Have you decided on Ubuntu vs Ubuntu MATE?

It’s hard to decide because I love them both and trying to ditch Windows

I can’t believe all that space being used

BleachBit uses the same settings for Chrome & Chromium

I don’t see my browser in **Bleach Bit ** I might be missing something

I thought that i had settled on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with gnome flashback installed [really don't like unity]. When testing 16.04 flashback was not behaving very well - someone on Ubuntu forums suggest trying UM and boy o boy am I super happy I did!

I'm not certain I could actually use 4 different linux desktops along with Windows 7 - context switching for me is somewhat of a challenge. I have adopted a different mental approach

there's no such thing as a bad computer or OSes - just different uses

I don't see myself completely switching from Windows 7 to Linux. I have way to much time invested with photography and editing images to abandon Windows.

Possibly you installed BleachBit after to installing Chromium and Chrome ... just to be certain you might consider reinstalling Chrome & Chromium. Software Boutique offers a reinstall option immediately to the right of "Show"

Yes I can surely understand keeping Windows around when you have that much going

I will check on that Bleach thing now. thanks so much

Rename or delete: ~/.config/bleachbit/bleachbit.ini

Then startup Bleachbit fresh again, and it will include your browser.

Trying to locate ~/.config/bleachbit/bleachbit.ini

Here's an image of where mine is located ...

This is Mate? I’m not seeing Files System
