Ubuntu 16.04 lt.s

I’m new to linux. I have been using ubuntu mate for about 1.5 years (italian). Recently I wanted to do dist-upgrade and when I check the current distribution version I found that I am using elementary loki. I cannot understand why. Can anyone help me. Thank you?

did you add the repositories for elementary? I’m not sure if that would do it or not, and how did you check your distribution version

Thank you very much for replying. I checked the distribution version as follows;
Applications -> system Instruments -> System monitor Ubuntu Mate -> system Tab
I also tried with following command
cat /proc/version

I’m not sure whether I have installed repositories of elementary. How can I check it?
Thank s again for your help.

I’m not sure that there are dedicated eOS repos but are you on the MATE desktop or elementary?

What do the following commands give?

cat /etc/lsb-release
echo $DESKTOP_SESSION

Thank you very much for your reply. This is the out of the command;

ottavahotel@ottavahotel-MS-AA53:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=“elementary”
DISTRIB_RELEASE=0.4.1
DISTRIB_CODENAME=loki
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=“elementary OS 0.4.1 Loki”
ottavahotel@ottavahotel-MS-AA53:~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION
mate
ottavahotel@ottavahotel-MS-AA53:~$

I check and also found I have added elementary repositories

Thank you

You are indeed on eOS Loki but with the MATE desktop. Did you install elementaryOS initially?

Which repositories have you found?

Yes I did installed Elementary os initially, then I did a fresh Installation of Ubuntu Mate deleting everything. Apart from the version which I see as elementary all other menu etc etc are ubuntu mate. When I switch off I get ubuntu mate screen and also when I switch on.

This is the output of sudo apt-cache policy

Thank you very much for your help.

did you do a complete new installation wiping elementary or did you just add the Ubuntu Mate desktop package and remove all the elementary parts

Either you didn’t completely reinstall Ubuntu MATE and just installed the desktop (I don’t know if the installer can do that), or something from the elementaryOS repos screwed things up. In any case, your OS is set as elementaryOS, as seen in the lsb-release file.

For a start, you can disable the eOS repos, they’re probably useless for you (unless you installed some specific apps from them). After it’s done, you should check with Synaptic if there are orphaned packages (Status → “Installed (local or obsolete)”).

Then, if you want to “switch” to Ubuntu MATE from the system point of view, I think you can just edit the lsb-release file. I have never done it, though, I’m not sure there can be consequences to this but I don’t think it’s anything else than a config file. You would open it as root (sudo pluma /etc/lsb-release) and change its content to that:

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=16.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=xenial
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04 LTS"

Yes I did a complete new installation wiping out everything.

Thank you!

I think this could have happened when I installed nutty.

Can you please let me know how can I disable the elementary packages.

Thank you!

you can go into the software and updates app and it should be under ‘other software’ unless you have somehow completely migrated over to elementary and then I would not know what to tell you

Yes I found all elementary packages under other software. all packages related to nutty. What should I do? Do I have to remove them?

Thank you!

In Software and Updates, you’ll see repositories (not softwares) related to elementaryOS. These are:

You also have a repository for Nutty (I don’t know what it is).

Just uncheck the box next to the repos you don’t need and close Software & Updates. It will ask you if you want to reload the sources, say yes.

After this is done, I strongly recommend to launch Synaptic (install it before if it isn’t) and check the section Status → “Installed (local or obsolete)” to see if there are packages from elementaryOS installed from the repos that will then be disabled.

The you very much for your instructions. I un flagged all elementary repositories. I have synaptic package manager installed and I checked the section you mentioned and found there packages related to elementary and ubuntu xenial. Except hi colour theme which is belongs only to elementary all other packages are belonging to xenial ubuntu or elementary + ubuntu. what I should do?

By the way nutty is display network information.

Thank you very much for your help and I very grateful to you.

That’s surprising that there’s a hicolor icons package there. Could you post screenshots of the list of packages in Synaptic (be sure to be in the section “Installed (local or obsolete)”)? You can host them on imgur.com.

Note: if there are dozens of packages in the list, don’t bother taking screenshots of the whole, start with one of the first page to evaluate the situation.

Thank you very much for your help. I posted all images @imgur.com as requested. You can access on following link.

Regards!

It’s not normal that there are so many packages from MATE. Did you disable one of the main repos by mistake? Just to be sure, when I said to disable the eOS repos, it was only the three from Launchpad with “elementary-os” in the name.

Give me the output of the following commands (put it between Code tags):

cat /etc/apt/sources.list
cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list

I un flagged and flagged third package in the list. but before applying changes. I mean 3rd one flagged. Thank you!

this is the out put of first command.
