Ubuntu Mate 16.04 Wifi Networks greyed out and disabled

Hi Up until I installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS (before that I had Ubuntu 1`4.04 LTS with Gnome Metacity) I was able to use the wifi on my Fujitsu Siemens T3010 laptop. However I now find that my wifi has become blocked. I have now also purchased two USB Adapters which are also blocked. I dual boot with XP and I have no problem with the USB Wifi adapters. I have a spare drive that I have used in the laptop with Mint 18 and Zorin but they too block my wifi adapters .
I have read and copied and pasted so many ā€˜solutionsā€™ into my Terminal without any success. Any ideas what I am doing incorrectly? I have noted that a few other people have also had similar issues but all solutions are different. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Hello
Please provide the output of:

sudo lshw -C network

Hi ouroumov,

Thank you for taking the time to adopt this.

As requested I have copied and pasted the output:

I have left the USB adapter (TL-WN725N in) attached. Even the adapter
which is recognized by the system has been disabled - hope the info will
be of use.

Regards.

Hi @matebod,

try booting again without the 2nd WiFi stick inserted, if your on-board WiFi adapter doesnā€™t work, plug in your USB WiFi stick and it should bite as I had a similar problem recently.

Try updating again if you get a connection!:

Hi wolfman, I tried your suggestion of rebooting without USB Wifi adapter
and it was the same. The wifi network was greyed out for both the onboard
and the USBā€¦ I plugged the usb back in and both the wifi network adapters
were greyed out. For your information I can confirm that the wifi switch on
the laptop body is switched to ā€˜onā€™ . I have also been through all the
settings in the BIOS looking for a Wifi option without success. When I
removed the USB adapter the narrative for that adapter remained greyed out
but changed to ā€˜Device Not Managedā€™ā€¦ One of the other things I read and
tried was moving the switch on and off several times to see if it woke the
wifi net - no luck with that either. I also read and tried different power
settings in case the laptop was suspended - no luck again.

Open a terminal and enter:

sudo rfkill list all

and post results here.

Hi Dave_Barnes,

Here is the out put as requested;

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes

I have checked in the BIOS, Moved the laptop case wifi switch several
times , tried rfkill unblock all,ā€¦nothing seems to change the Hard
Blocked output.

Regards.

Hi @matebod,

also take a look at @ouroumovā€™s answers here, maybe he can chime in on this one again as his commands seem to have solved that problem but I donā€™t know if the commands will do the same for your problem?.

You will probably have to boot Windows and enable the wireless LAN device in ā€œNetwork Settingsā€ as there is an additional software controlled WLAN switch. You may also have to use the Intel PROset Wireless utility to enable the WLAN device.

See page 92 in this document:

Hi,

I have already tried to do what you have suggested - without any luckā€¦
I have already downloaded the manual and looked at the wifi stuffā€¦no
joy!

I have enabled and re-enabled the connection in XPā€™s network manager, I
have installed the Intel Proset Utility and it has reported that a
driver is not installed, so I had opened up the Device Manager and the
intel wifi dedvice looked fine (no re or yellow icons by it) - the Intel
utility still reports that a driver is not installed, which seems odd. I
have removed, installed and reinstalled the Intel 2100 b mini
driverā€¦still no change. However as soon as I plug in the TL-WN725N
wifi adapter I have wifi connectivity with XPā€¦ sadly this is not the
case in Mateā€¦- which reports that both the usb wifi and onboard
wifi are disabled.

As you have probably gathered I am somewhat confused by Mate, first time
in several years of use that I have had any issues with Ubuntu, and very
new to it all.

I have noticed that since installing Ubuntu Mate I have been getting
error messages when I boot:

[drm:intel_set_cpu_fifo_underrun_reporting [i915]] ERROR pipe A underrun

and

[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] ERROR CPU pipe B FIFO
underrun

These two messages were highlighted in the output from ā€˜dmesgā€™ ā€¦
could it possibly have any

relevance.

I have ā€˜googledā€™ them but regrettably what I found didnā€™t really mean
much to me.

I regret my input is somewhat foggy but Iā€™m trying hard!

Too prevent you using up too much precious time I will say that maybe
try one more suggestion then I will try to revert to using ubuntu 32 bit
with gnome metacity as that worked fine before (for over two years
without a hiccup!)

Best regardsā€¦

Hi @matebod,

try a different approach, with a network cable connection, start in recovery mode and run ā€œdpkgā€ and then restart per the guide with ā€œCtrl + Alt + Delā€, donā€™t click on resume!.
See if that helps at all?:

Hi there,

Many thanks for the suggestionā€¦tried it a few times .

Also tried option of restarting network in recoveryā€¦ a few timesā€¦
neither worked.

Thank you for your continued support but I think the time has come to
try my spare drive again and go for a completely fresh install as the
amount of time and effort spent on this has become burdensomeā€¦even
before I used the support forum I spent far too much time trying all the
solutions on the internet. My trusty old laptop will still be usable
with XP if all else failsā€¦Why oh why did that company abandon
such a popular operating system?..

My very best seasonal regards to you for all your assistance.

Hi Dave_Barnes,

Thank you againā€¦ I have tried your suggestionsā€¦sadly I am unable to
report any progress.

I have decided to abandon this course of trouble shooting as even before
I placed my issues onto the forum I had spent a lot of time reading
about other peoples problems.

Going forward I will try to do a totally fresh install on a spare drive
and try that (ā€¦againā€¦) In need I can always put my original drive
back and use my XP installation to get onto the internetā€¦not ideal but
a solution / workaround.

Once again I really have appreciated your help / suggestions - thank you.

Regards

Iggy

Hi Iggy,

make sure you get the 16.04.1 release if you do a fresh install!:
