Well I will see and let you know if that happens in a few years. I did 24.04 LTS with Ubuntu Pro myself.
I already have Ubuntu Pro enabled... but of course I'll need to decide what to do when EOL approaches. The obvious choice would be to upgrade to another LTS and deal with all debs that were replaced by snaps. My configurations will be lost and I'll have to do redo everything.
Another possibility would be to change repositories to those of the newest 24.04 based mint and then upgrade. I don't know what will happen but in theory it should preserve my configurations...
FYI: I upgraded my system in place at least three times already. Both Firefox
and Thunderbird
were migrated to snaps without configuration and data losses.
Good luck, @Marco_Boneff !! Please let us know how it goes.
Well... I had issues after upgrading that I'm still trying to figure out. This is exactly why I fear every system upgrade.
This time after login I have no panels and no dock with the usual "cupertino" layout and compiz. To make the system usable I need to "killall mate-panel" and "killall plank" at every login. I'm still trying to find a solution for this behavior but all I find are 10 years old posts on other forums. Has anybody encountered the same problem before after a system upgrade from LTS to LTS?
Thank you so much. I actually solved a minute ago while inspecting startup applications. After upgrading the list has been updated with new scripts that are actually conflicting with my custom settings. In my case I had to disable "picom" and "Dock Reload". I wonder why after upgrade these things have to be enabled even if I had them disabled before. For now this solves my main issues. Of course Thunderbird is now a snap and can't use the companion "birdtray" extension, but I'll figure out a way...
For completeness, I just want to mention that I also resolved the issues with the Thunderbird Snap... by simply removing the Snap and installing the deb package offered by the Mozilla PPA instead. You can find the instructions to enable the new PPA here. If anyone is interested, the main reason I prefer to use a deb package over a Snap is the integration with the rest of the system. With the deb package, I can use the extension that allows me to minimize Thunderbird to an icon in the notification area. Additionally, my theme is not available as a Snap, so any app installed as a Snap looks terrible. Furthermore, after the upgrade from 22.04, I discovered with disappointment that my Thunderbird profile was not migrated to the Snap version. Fortunately, everything was resolved simply by removing the Snap and installing a native deb package, sourced from this external PPA. Oh, beloved ubuntu, why your snaps are still this awful after all this time?
