Hi, @djblind and welcome to the Ubuntu MATE Community!

You should be able to use the Raspberry Pi 4 version on the Pi 5.

I just built the latest Armbian for Raspberry Pi 4 and it works fine on the Pi 5.

My bad, I just tested Ubuntu-Mate Raspberry Pi 4 image on my Pi 5 and it doesn't work. The bootloader says it has no support for Raspberry Pi 5.

Armbian might be your best bet at this point until Ubuntu-Mate.org releases a Pi 5 image.

I'm unaware of any work towards a Raspberry Pi 5 release of Ubuntu MATE at this time. Another user was able to get Ubuntu MATE's image working with a Pi 5, if you have Pi 4 hardware:

Alternately, you could use the regular Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Raspberry Pi image, and then install ubuntu-mate-desktop on top:

Being 22.04 is EOL in April 2025. Looks like we have to find another distro/desktop. I like Ubuntu Mate defaults but have not found a good way of getting to the same desktop using the RPi Image Ubuntu server image. But I am currently running 24.04.2 & the only real problem is the display flickering.

This does work but Firefox has issues. The screen outline comes up but it does not populate. Have not tried anything else yet.

A long shot might be to look at Martin Wimpress' script for building a Pi image and adapt it to 24.04 and Pi 5 - that could be a lot of work, however.

Maybe it is better for them to make it clear that they are no longer interested in supporting Raspberry Pi version of the Ubuntu Mate.

Ofcourse deep down i still hoping for them to continue supporting Raspberry Pi as for me Ubuntu Mate in the best and most familiar desktop variant of Ubuntu Linux

I recently asked the project leader directly and got confirmation that it's unlikely we'll see a new Ubuntu MATE image. They do take a lot of work. The good news is that Ubuntu for Raspberry Pi is a first class release target while he was working for Canonical.

The main website has been updated to reflect this.
