This is going to sound like a silly complaint, but I change folder names all the time. In Windows, all you have to do is click on the folder name twice (slowly) and the name becomes editable. In Mate, you have to click on the folder and hit F2 or right click on the folder and select rename.
It drives me nuts. To this day, I still try the MS slow click and get frustrated every time it does not work.
Is there a way to make this work in Linux or do I just have to suck it up and deal with it?
I’ve found a similar and very old discussion topic (from 2016) here in the Ubuntu MATE Community - “Rename file with double click?” - regarding that possibility of renaming files on double click:
On that discussion, @ouroumov pointed out that he believes that “Caja” (“Caja is the default file manager for the MATE Desktop Environment“) does not support that feature yet (although someone could create a Python extension for Caja that would implement that) and he linked to the following issue / feature request for “Caja” (“Click on the File/Folder name to start renaming it”) in Caja’s GitHub repo / repository (issue created in the year 2014):
Reading all the comments in that issue, it seems to me that the feature is still not implemented In that issue, the following comment written, on 2th July 2016, by the user Etamuk, says that “Thunar” ( xfce:thunar:start [Xfce Docs] - “Thunar is a modern file manager for the Xfce Desktop Environment“) already has that double-click to rename file feature:
File manager Thunar has it on board. It would be nice to see this in MATE.
German readers can get more about Thunar here: [ https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Thunar/]
Although I have never used “Thunar”, I know that it’s definitely possible to use “Thunar” as the default File Manager in Ubuntu MATE, instead of “Caja”, and I know that a few people here in the Ubuntu MATE Community do use “Thunar” instead of “Caja” in Ubuntu MATE. See, for instance, the following discussion:
I just right click on the folder then on ‘properties’ at the bottom and then can edit/change the name. I just tried it and it works both on the home folders like Documents, Downloads, templates, public etc and the folders I have made myself. I didn’t even know about the F2 thing.
Thanks @ricmarques. Your info lead me to this post.
I tried the simple steps of going to Preferred Applications and chose Thunar and that did not work. Interestingly, it does show up in Brisk as an application and you can run it. When doing it that way, the double click name change does not work.
Then I found the above link after digging into your post and frankly, it seems like a bunch of work just to make this change and I am worried too much of my desktop experience will be impacted so I am going to pass and just continue to deal with Caja for now.
Regardless, I am going to mark this as solved. I appreciated your reply and I did enjoy reading all of this information as I always learn something from these discussion even if ultimately I didn’t opt to try the solution.
