Ubuntu MATE 25.04 beta testing

Hello!
I wanted to open a topic to know if anyone had already test the coming version of Ubuntu MATE.
Personally, I cannot try with a virtual machine at the moment.
Do we know the version of MATE shipped?

Regards

If you're using a Ubuntu system, you can always explore from there, eg. I could use

guiverc@d7050-next:~/uwn/issues/885$ rmadison mate-desktop
 mate-desktop | 1.6.2-1 | trusty/universe | source, amd64, arm64, armhf, i386, powerpc, ppc64el
 mate-desktop | 1.12.1-1 | xenial/universe | source, amd64, arm64, armhf, i386, powerpc, ppc64el, s390x
 mate-desktop | 1.20.1-2ubuntu1 | bionic/universe | source, amd64, arm64, armhf, i386, ppc64el, s390x
 mate-desktop | 1.24.0-2 | focal/universe | source, amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, riscv64, s390x
 mate-desktop | 1.26.0-1 | jammy/universe | source, amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, riscv64, s390x
 mate-desktop | 1.26.2-1.1build3 | noble/universe | source, amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, riscv64, s390x
 mate-desktop | 1.26.2-1.1build3 | oracular/universe | source, amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, riscv64, s390x
 mate-desktop | 1.26.2-1.2 | plucky/universe | source, amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, riscv64, s390x

I could also just pull up the current manifest and explore packages enclosed on the current daily, ie. https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/daily-live/current/plucky-desktop-amd64.manifest which will show the packages & versions found on ISO itself.

You could also go to https://packages.ubuntu.com/ etc etc...

The first method I used needs only a Ubuntu system (the command I used probably requires devscripts to be installed), the second requires access to a browser etc.

I will riot if Plucky uses 1.26.2 still.

Thanks for the links!

The manifest shows "atril 1.26.2-4"

If the buggy behavior I've reported in the past with the icons, boundary lines, and inexplicable brightening up (and advocated for to be fixed) is still present in Ubuntu MATE 25.04, then that's gonna amount to a huge "screw you" to us from the developers. Yes, you read that right. Why no communication? Why no action? The bugs are there; why not fix them (especially since they're so "in-your-face")? Wimpy never responded to me or to anyone on this board (despite financial support from some folks). Nothing. Very disheartening to hear that MATE is still on 1.26. But there's a minor point change of .1 to .2 at the end, so who knows if the bug is fixed?

Update:

So I downloaded and installed the Ubuntu MATE 25.04 LTS beta in VirtualBox. The exact same behavior I reported a long time ago is still present. I am disappointed. The border lines still show up when I'm clicking on another applet, and the program icons near the main menu still brighten up inexplicably when I click on an applet in the left upper corner. See picture below. Yup. A "screw you" to us from the developers. They didn't fix this; not even for a LTS release.

A LTS release. Come on. I don't get why the community isn't saying something about it. I don't get how many can't see the significance of this. It's such an "in-your-face" bug that it interferes with the UX. Would you still shop at a store where the salespeople or whatever walk away after you holler at them to help or something? "Hey, can you help me?" (Salesperson walks away.) "Oh, I guess I'll shop here anyway and support their poor customer service!" Do you see how ridiculous that is? Anyway, I am done. Wow. Good luck to those who keep using MATE.

25.04 is not an LTS. Next LTS is 26.04.

Also this is a Beta. You can report bugs and they might get fixed in the release. Please do report any bugs you find.

By the way, there is a redundant separator line in the network manager applet. Have you seen it before? It deserves your close attention too.

Things I noticed were different out of the box:

  1. Terminal default is 'I Beam' instead of 'Block' character.
  2. apt show doesn't text wrap any more.

As @omnimaxus mentioned, there are glitches on the panel related to interacting (left-click) with the indicator-applet. Interacting with indicator-applet can "highlight" other panel members depending on a previous interaction with the panel.

  1. Easy example is the Firefox icon; simply move the Firefox icon, then interact with the indicator-applet.
  2. Another example is the inhibit applet: Right-click on the inhibit icon, then interact with indicator-applet panel.
  3. clock-applet: Add to panel, then left click (then click again to close), then interact indicator-applet panel.

If you remove all the other members except for the menu ... then this can also get highlighted.

The result will depend on 'theme':

  • Yaru-MATE-light, Yaru, etc., for example, puts a box around Inhibit, but will 'lighten' the Firefox icon.
  • DarkMATE (from mate-themes) puts a dashed line around either, BlueMenta puts a thin solid line around either.

I don't know how this would be implemented under the hood, but it sure seems like a bug with the panel.

Another thing: if you have the 'hide buttons' (with arrows) on the panel; these can be targets of the 'highlight' too.

A few other things (seem to be holdovers from current release): I noticed that errors keep popping up in DBus related to plank and gvfs.

Reported here: Bug #2106286 “Spam in dbus monitor “specified location is not su...” : Bugs : Plank

And blueman crashes - I've resolved this on my desktop 24.04 (same problem) by building blueman from source; so it's fixed upstream if nothing else.

History might repeat itself. I noticed that Ubuntu MATE 24.10 release notes mentioned being unable to ship the latest MATE desktop (1.28) then due to bugs/regressions:

First, MATE 1.28 will need to end up in Debian, before it's synced to Ubuntu, which it hasn't.

A quick search on the Debian mailing lists brings up this:

So... get out the riot gear and barricade the door, I guess? :fire: :door: :grinning:

Stephen, do you know if they have fixed engrampa for .7z?

1.) Sticky notes applet (both 24.04 and 24.10) and 2.) Global menu applet (at 24.10) also not working properly. (menu shown both on panel and on window itself.)

Can you describe the bug you are looking for; i.e. a minimal reproducible example? It's still possible to submit testing reports for Plucky Daily and Plucky Final.

Presumably with regards to Sticky Notes you mean this bug: Stickynotes crashes on Alpine Linux and Gentoo · Issue #664 · mate-desktop/mate-applets · GitHub

I suspect this won't be resolved in UM 25.04 because I don't think mate-applets 1.28.1 (which has a fix) has made it into this release (will confirm). You can always remove mate-applets and install it from source if you need the Sticky Notes applet.

For what it's worth: I've listed the bugs I encountered whilst testing a live session, including many that people have queried: Live Session in Ubuntu MATE Desktop amd64 in Plucky Daily | Ubuntu QA

The main concern (to me) is blueman-applet crashing - as people may depend on bluetooth devices to operate their computer (e.g. keyboards, mice, other devices).

Otherwise; here are the confirmed bugs:

  1. Engrampa does not support password protected 7z files. Bug #1872532 “Password Protection Not Being Applied To New Files...” : Bugs : engrampa package : Ubuntu
  2. Sticky Notes is not functional Bug #2106789 “Sticky notes crash when open new note” : Bugs : mate-applets package : Ubuntu
  3. Glitches are observed when interacting with the panel (e.g. the indicator panel). Bug #2078570 “Boundary line appears around applet next to the “c...” : Bugs : Ubuntu MATE
  4. DBus seems to get errors from gvfsd when using Plank or opening Caja. Bug #2106286 “Spam in dbus monitor “specified location is not su...” : Bugs : Plank
  5. Global Application Menu does not capture menus correctly any more :frowning: Bug #2106788 “mate-applet-appmenu global menu not capturing appl...” : Bugs : vala-panel-appmenu package : Ubuntu

Some of these are fixed upstream, but will probably not be fixed in 25.04.

there is a known issue in 24.04 that while engrampa can compress in .7z it will not decompress. You have to use pea zip or Xarchiver to do decompress.

Has it been reported on launchpad?

Yes this topic has been here before, see these post:

I use the password protection to protect many of my documents and keep my passwords on a USB drive that is also password protected. I find encryption in Linux a bit over my skills.
I didn't realize it was just password protected compressions that were a problem, but that is the reason I use .7z compressions.

Hi, @stephematician  ... and everyone else!

You wrote:

Are you talking about a "blueman" ("Blueman is a GTK+ Bluetooth Manager") crash when booting from the Live "Ubuntu MATE 25.04" Beta ISO? If you are, I also got that crash and it seems to be the following bug that had been reported by @mickee (Brian Bogdan) in Launchpad, almost a year ago (on 18th May 2024):

Bug #2066094 “blueman-applet crashed with g-io-error-quark: Timeout was reached (24)" : Bugs : blueman package : Ubuntu - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/blueman/+bug/2066094 :

I see that you (@stephematician) have also added the following comment in that bug, 9 days ago (on 5th April 2025):

And the good / better news is that I see that Daniel Van Vugt (from Canonical), just 4 days ago (on 11th April 2025), has added the following comment to that bug:

Changed in blueman (Ubuntu):
importance: Medium → High
milestone: none → plucky-updates
tags: added: plucky

So, I'm guessing that, considering that someone from Canonical has "upgraded" that "bug" priority ("Importance") from Medium to High, with that comment, there is hope that the bug gets fixed for "Ubuntu 25.04" ("Plucky Puffin") and its flavors / flavours such as "Ubuntu MATE 25.04"
